Natural stone gives you the colours the quarry gives you. If your brand needs a specific colour, or you need two hundred coasters that look like each other, engineered stone is the only honest route: real stone chips set in a binder, cast to a mould and ground flat.

The binder is the specification and it decides the behaviour. A cement binder is porous, so it behaves a little like sandstone and will mark. A resin binder is not porous and will not mark — but it is not heatproof, so it is not the thing to put a hot mug on. We will tell you which we are quoting and why, and we will not describe either as “stone” without saying what is holding it together.

What you get in return is control: colour matched to your palette, chip size and density chosen, thickness identical across the run, and edges that are actually square. For a retail product with a barcode on the box, that consistency usually matters more than provenance.

It is real stone chips held in a binder, which is a meaningful difference. We will always name the binder, because a cement-bound terrazzo marks like a porous stone and a resin-bound one does not but cannot take a hot mug. Calling both simply “stone” hides the thing you need to know.
