Why we exist

Stone coasters are sold on photographs, and stone photographs beautifully. What is almost never explained is what the material does over the next year.

That an absorbent sandstone will hold the first red wine spill permanently. That marble etches — dissolves — the moment a gin and tonic touches it, and that etching is not a stain and cannot be cleaned off. That a sealed absorbent coaster is a contradiction, because sealing closes the pores that made it work. That a flat granite coaster is a puddle waiting to happen unless someone cuts a groove in it.

None of that is bad news, and none of it stops us selling any of these stones. It just decides which one belongs in your room.

What we actually make

Absorbent sandstone, unsealed, printed with inks that sink into the surface. Natural slate, split rather than sawn, laser-etched so the mark is cut into the rock. Marble, engraved or printed, sold with the etching conversation had up front. Granite, engraved, with a slightly recessed face or a drip groove so the condensation has somewhere to go. Terrazzo and engineered stone, cast to a colour you chose with identical thickness across the run. And boxed sets, individually divided.

Every one of them is backed with full-coverage cork or felt, because stone is harder than any table finish and grit under a bare edge behaves like sandpaper.

What we do not make

Cork, neoprene, wood, ceramic and acrylic coasters. Different materials, different machines, and there are people who do each of them better than we would.

We also will not seal an absorbent sandstone coaster and describe it as absorbent, and we will not tell you a sealer protects marble from etching. A sealer reduces staining. Etching is a different mechanism and a sealer does close to nothing about it.

Why we will sometimes tell you not to buy stone

A busy wet bar is the wrong place for it. Stone breaks when it lands on a tiled floor, it is heavy to move in volume, and an absorbent one takes its first permanent mark on the first spirit spill of the first shift.

Stone belongs in gifting, in tasting rooms, in hotel rooms, in boardrooms and on shelves — places where it is looked at as much as used. If you are running a hundred covers a night, we will say so and you can spend the money somewhere it works harder.

How we price

No dollar figures on this site. Price moves with the stone, the size, the marking method and the quantity — and freight matters more here than in almost any other product, because stone is heavy. We put the shipping weight on the quote, which is unusual and should not be. Send the details and a real quote comes back the same day.

On artwork

Etching and engraving cut into stone, so there is a minimum line width below which detail simply closes up, and slate and granite are dark, so a pale mark reads and a mid-tone one disappears. We redraw for the stone free and show you a proof.

We hold the redrawn file, so next year’s gifting run comes back identical rather than nearly identical.
