Natural Slate Coasters

Slate is split rather than cut, along the cleavage planes the rock already has, which is why a riven slate face has that shallow uneven texture and why no two are identical. It also means thickness varies slightly across a batch. That is the material, not a defect, and anybody promising perfectly uniform natural slate is grinding it flat.

We laser-etch rather than print. The laser removes the dark weathered surface and exposes the paler stone beneath, so the mark is a permanent change to the rock rather than a layer sitting on it. It cannot scratch off, fade or peel, and it is the reason slate is the best-value engraved stone we sell.

The edge is a real decision. A natural riven edge looks handmade and is slightly fragile; a chamfered edge is cleaner, more robust and reads as a manufactured product. We will quote both and we will point out that slate chips if it is dropped on a hard floor, because it will.

Why is our slate not all the same thickness?

Because slate is split along its own cleavage planes rather than sawn. Variation is inherent to the material. If you need dimensional consistency, granite or an engineered stone is the honest answer, and we would rather say so than grind the character off your slate.

Will the etching wear off?

No. Etching removes the dark weathered surface and exposes the paler stone underneath, so it is a change to the rock itself rather than a coating. It will still be there when the coaster chips.
