Marble Coasters

Marble is the most photographed stone in this category and the least understood. It is calcium carbonate, which means it reacts with acid. Lemon, lime, wine, vinegar, cola and most cocktails dull the polish on contact and leave a matt patch.

That patch is an etch, not a stain. A stain is something sitting in the stone that can in principle be drawn out. An etch is the surface having been chemically dissolved, and nothing cleans it off — it can only be repolished. This is the single most common complaint about marble coasters and it is almost never explained before purchase.

So we explain it. A sealer helps with staining and does essentially nothing about etching, because a sealer is not an acid barrier. What is etching, and can it be cleaned off?

Etching is the acid in a drink chemically dissolving the polished surface, leaving a dull matt patch. It is not a stain and it cannot be cleaned off — only repolished. Any drink with citrus or wine in it will do it, usually the first time.

Should we seal marble coasters?

Sealing reduces staining and does almost nothing for etching, because a sealer is not an acid barrier. If your use case involves cocktails, the sealer is not the answer — a different stone is.
