Granite Coasters

Granite is the hard end of this catalogue. It is an igneous rock, dense and effectively non-porous, so it does not stain, does not etch on contact with citrus, and will outlast the business that ordered it.

The trade is the one nobody mentions: because it absorbs nothing, every drop of condensation stays on the surface. A flat granite coaster becomes a shallow puddle, the glass slides on it, and eventually somebody lifts the glass and the coaster comes with it. So we recess the face very slightly or cut a drip groove around the edge. It costs almost nothing and it is the difference between a granite coaster that works and one that is simply a heavy tile.

It is also heavy, and that is a real cost. Granite ships at roughly twice the weight of slate for the same size, and on a gifting run of a thousand sets the freight is a line item worth knowing about before you commit. We put the shipping weight on the quote.
