Absorbent Sandstone Coasters

This is the coaster people mean when they say a coaster should “work”. Sandstone is porous, so the condensation off a cold glass goes into the stone and evaporates out again, and the ring is gone by the time anybody looks. It is genuinely satisfying and it is the best-selling stone we make.

The reason it works is the reason it stains. Those same open pores take in red wine, coffee, oil and anything else that lands on them, and they keep it. There is no cleaning process that reverses it. A sandstone coaster is a consumable with a long life, not an heirloom, and anybody who tells you otherwise has sealed it — at which point it is no longer absorbent and you have bought a heavy printed disc.

So we do not seal them, we print with inks that sink into the surface rather than sitting on it, and we back them with full-coverage cork so the unglazed stone never touches a table.
